Where to Find Statistics on a Variety of Subjects

American FactFinder has been "decommissioned" and is no longer available, BUT much of its CENSUS type of data for topics such as United States population, housing, economic, and geographic area can be found at https://data.census.gov/cedsci/. Statistics are presented by the U.S Census Bureau.

Bureau of Justice Statistics at http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbo provides plenty of statistics on topics such as corrections, courts, crime type, criminal justice data improvement program, employment and expenditure, federal, law enforcement, and victims. You can browse through publications or use the keyword search engine at the top of the web page.

Census Bureau of the United States.  When it comes to statistics, then you need to think the U.S. Census Bureau. There are all kinds of statistics and publications covering people, households, business, industry, and much, much more. You can select information for an entire state or for a very small area such as a census tract. There is SO much information here that we will provide a few links to information that you may be interested in, but not be able to find easily.

 

Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  “ is to collaborate to create the expertise, information, and tools that people and communities need to protect their health – through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury and disability, and preparedness for new health threats.”  The CDC is one of the first places to go to find information on health-related topics. Different agencies are responsible for collecting information on different aspects of health but the CDC is one of the main, overall organization responsible for coordinating the protection of health in the United States. The main web page of CDC is located at http://www.cdc.gov/.

Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Report is part of the CDC and National Center for Educational Statistics. The weekly report provides statistics on a variety of diseases. There are reports that provide more information about some diseases than just statistics. MMWR is located on the Web at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/.

The National Center for Educational Statistics at http://nces.ed.gov/  is “the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data related to education.”  If you need statistics about education then this is one of the first places to go.

The National Center for Health Statistics is the Nation’s principal health statistics agency.  This agency is associated with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). There is a tremendous amount of statistics and information about all kinds of health-related topics. You can browse the website, use the keyword search engine, or use the A-Z Index at the top of the web page. NCHS can be found online at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/index.htm

 

SRDS: The LifeStyle Market Analyst Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS) has been involved with market analysis for many, many years. The demographic information provided by this company is very important to a variety of people, especially anyone wanting to start a business in a specific area. The LifeStyle Market Analyst book (service) provides lifestyle, demographic, and geographic data for a number of cities and geographic areas within the United States. Some of the information comes from the Census Bureau such as occupations, education, ethnicity, age, marital status, income, and more. However, the a lot of the information within Lifestyle Market Analyst cannot be found in many sources. Just some of the lifestyle information includes number of people who read books, own pets, attend cultural events, invest, ride bicycles, golf, own a camera, and much, much more data pertaining to “lifestyle.” The LifeStyle Market Analyst can be VERY expensive, so please check with your local library if they have this book or subscribe to this type of service.

 

The Statistical Abstract of the United States has been a well-respected and used paper source at the Reference Desk at most libraries for many, many years. This source compiles information from sources such as Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and many other Federal agencies and private organizations. There are A LOT of charts, graphs, tables, and statistics covering a large variety of topics. Uniform Crime Reports is one of the main programs where the FBI collects, publishes, and archives crime statistics for the nation. Statistics “are produced from data provided by nearly 17,000 law enforcement agencies across the United States.”  The website can be found at http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/ucr.


World Factbook  “provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 267 world entities.” If you want access to all kinds of statistics about countries, then the World Factbook is one of the resources that you need to view.
